Municipal Masterclass 2026 Recap: 200+ Attendees, Big Conversations, and a New Energy Around Municipal Politics

What started as an idea and a simple name sitting in a notes app turned into one of Ontario’s most exciting gatherings focused on municipal politics, campaigning, leadership, and community engagement. On May 14, 2026, Municipal Masterclass, presented by EOK Consults, welcomed more than 200 attendees from over 40 municipalities across Ontario (and beyond) to Mississauga for a full day of practical conversations, campaign insights, networking, and real-world lessons on what actually works in modern municipal politics.

From packed panels and keynote sessions to nonstop networking over coffee and lunch, the energy in the room was evident from the moment doors opened.

Municipal Masterclass brought together a unique mix of Mayors, Councillors, candidates, campaign strategists, organizers, students, vendors, advocacy leaders, first-time prospective candidates, and elected officials — all under one roof.

And perhaps most importantly, it created a space where people passionate about local leadership could genuinely learn from one another.

A Day Focused on Real Conversations and Practical Campaign Insights

One of the defining features of Municipal Masterclass 2026 was its focus on practical, actionable discussions instead of overly theoretical conversations.

The event featured a diverse lineup of panels, workshops, fireside chats, keynote presentations, and platform-specific campaign sessions covering everything from leadership and voter outreach to digital campaigning, fundraising, data, and community engagement.

Winning, Serving, Leading: Lessons from Elected Officials

One of the headline panels of the day featured Mayor David West, Councillor Dipika Damerla, Councillor Josh Matlow, and Councillor Kate Cadigan in a discussion moderated by journalist Ahmad Elbayoumi.

The conversation focused on leadership, campaigning, serving increasingly diverse communities, navigating public expectations, and the realities of municipal office in today’s political environment.

The panel struck a strong balance between humour, practical advice, and honest reflections from elected officials actively working in municipal politics.

Modern Campaigns: Data, Dollars & What Actually Works

Moderated by Harneet Singh, this panel explored how modern campaigns are evolving and the growing role of data, voter targeting, fundraising, digital outreach, and campaign technology.

Panellists Marion Nader, Aleem Kanji and Cameron Bonesso discussed the importance of precision targeting, changing voter behaviour, modern communication strategies, and how campaigns can effectively balance authenticity with digital sophistication.

Attendees heard practical advice on everything from campaign infrastructure and audience building to volunteer engagement and modern voter persuasion.

Winning Diverse Communities: What Modern Municipal Campaigns Must Understand

This panel quickly became one of the most talked-about conversations of the day.

Featuring Councillor Lily Cheng, Regional Councillor Colleen James, Councillor Sameera Ali, and Councillor Parthi Kandavel, the discussion focused on authentic engagement, building trust in rapidly changing communities, and the importance of understanding how modern municipalities are evolving.

Rather than treating diversity as a buzzword, the panel offered thoughtful and practical insights into communication, accessibility, relationship-building, and community leadership.

What Actually Wins Municipal Elections: Wins, Losses & Lessons

Moderated by Blue Knox, this panel featured experienced campaign strategists and former candidates sharing candid stories and lessons from the campaign trail.

The discussion explored what separates successful campaigns from unsuccessful ones, common mistakes candidates make, fundraising realities, voter outreach, and how campaigns can stay disciplined in increasingly competitive environments.

The honesty and practical nature of the conversation strongly resonated with attendees preparing for upcoming municipal campaigns.

Fireside Chats That Captured the Room

Two fireside chats became standout moments of the event.

Leadership, Politics & Modern Cities: A Fireside Chat

Hosted by Yudhvir Jaswal, this marquee discussion featured Mayor Berry Vrbanovic, Mayor Cam Guthrie, and Bonnie Crombie.

The conversation touched on leadership, campaigning, public engagement, rapidly changing municipalities, and the growing importance of municipal politics in Canada.

The panel also explored how political communication has evolved, how leaders navigate increasingly diverse communities, and why local leadership matters more than ever.

Breaking Through: How First-Time Candidates Win

Hosted by Wyatt Sharpe, this fireside chat with Councillor Kate Cadigan delivered one of the most inspiring conversations of the day.

The discussion focused on youth engagement, first-time candidates, campaigning authentically, and the realities of breaking into public office.

For many attendees considering a future run themselves, this conversation left a major impact.

Several attendees later shared that the event gave them the confidence and motivation to seriously consider running for office.

One attendee shared:

“The event gave me the inspiration to announce my candidacy.”

Keynotes and Platform Sessions Delivered Actionable Insights

Municipal Masterclass also featured keynote presentations and platform-focused sessions from leading voices across politics, digital strategy, and campaign technology.

Mayor Patrick Brown and Mayor Marianne Meed Ward both delivered keynote presentations that resonated strongly with attendees, sharing lessons from leadership, campaigning, governing, and public engagement.

Additional presentations from:

  • Lauren Jutai from Meta
  • Steve de Eyre from TikTok
  • Yair Chen from Logivote
  • Nancy Cooke from Campaign Compass
  • and other industry experts

provided attendees with practical tools, campaign strategies, digital advertising insights, and real-world examples directly applicable to modern municipal campaigns.

From social media strategy and platform trends to voter engagement and campaign technology, attendees walked away with actionable information they could immediately apply to their own campaigns and organizations.

Networking, Community, and a Shared Passion for Local Leadership

Beyond the programming itself, one of the most powerful aspects of Municipal Masterclass was the networking and community-building that took place throughout the day.

The conversations between sessions, over breakfast and coffee, during lunch, and in networking areas became a major highlight for attendees.

Candidates connected with strategists. Campaign teams connected with vendors and elected officials. First-time prospective candidates met experienced campaign professionals.

The room was filled with people passionate about local leadership and public service.

The Feedback

The response to Municipal Masterclass 2026 exceeded expectations.

Post-event survey feedback showed overwhelmingly positive attendee sentiment, with the vast majority of respondents saying they were “very likely” to recommend a future event organized by EOK Consults.

One attendee shared:

“The panel discussions were the best delivery and most educational. Patrick Brown was great.”

Others highlighted the practical nature of the event, the quality of the speakers, and the opportunity to network with campaign professionals and municipal leaders from across Ontario.

More Than Just a Conference

Municipal Masterclass 2026 proved something important:

There is a real appetite for practical conversations, innovation, networking, and collaboration in municipal politics.

The event was never intended to feel overly academic or disconnected from reality. Instead, the goal was to create a space focused on what actually works — grounded in real campaign experience, practical lessons, and honest conversations.

Seeing more than 200 people come together around that shared vision was incredibly meaningful for the entire EOK Consults team.

To everyone who attended, spoke, partnered with us, sponsored the event, volunteered, or supported Municipal Masterclass in any way — thank you.

And honestly?

It feels like we’re just getting started.
